Jr. High League Change

**Junior High Athletics Announcement**

American Leadership Academy Ironwood

850 W Combs Rd

Queen Creek, AZ 85140

Dear Parents and Student-Athletes,

This letter concerns a league change for our Junior High Athletic Programs.  This coming school year we will be participating in the Desert Middle School Athletic League (DMSAL) https://sites.google.com/view/dmsal/home in all Junior High sports, with the exception of Cross Country and Track, which will remain in the CAA and will continue to compete in the fall and spring, respectively.   This change will affect the time of year that some of our sports are played. Here is the breakdown of each Junior High sport and it’s season:

QUARTER 1

AUG  - OCT

QUARTER 2

OCT  - DEC

QUARTER 3

  JAN - MAR

QUARTER 4

  MAR - MAY

BOYS BASEBALL

BOYS SOCCER

  FOOTBALL

  BOYS BASKETBALL

GIRLS SOFTBALL

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

  GIRLS BASKETBALL

  GIRLS SOCCER

  WRESTLING

Specific tryout dates and game schedules will be posted on our athletic website (www.alaiwathletics.org) when available.  Our new league schedule will require those participating in Quarter 1 sports of Baseball and Softball to complete registration prior to tryouts which will begin the first week of school.

NOTE:  For incoming 8th graders who played baseball or softball last spring, the league will require you to get another physical to participate in the 1st Quarter/Fall, Baseball or Softball season.  Physicals must be dated on or after March 1, 2019 to be valid for the 2019-20 school year.

After weighing the pros and cons of playing in the Desert Middle School Athletic League, we felt the pros highly outweigh the cons.  The most impactful reasons this change was made are the following:

  1. The league will provide opportunities for our young, Junior High athletes to participate in a variety of sports due to the four quarter rotation.

  2. It will allow our varsity high school coaches the opportunity to play an integral roll, either directly or indirectly, in the development of our younger student-athletes, because in most cases the high school season is a different time of year.

  3. It will allow us to play a more local, but still competitive schedule.

  4. The schedules in the DMSAL are consistent week-to-week.  Most games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Due to these inherent benefits, we feel this league best fits what we are looking for moving forward - which is to give our student-athletes the best opportunity to improve, compete, and experience success as much as possible before entering High School.

Below is a list of schools that currently play in the DMSAL:

ALA  Ironwood

Benjamin Franklin

Cactus Canyon (Apache Junction)

Combs

Hohokam (Coolidge)

We are very excited to see our Junior High student-athletes and their teams grow and enjoy their experiences as they compete in our new league.  Please reach out to us if you have any questions moving forward and thank you for supporting ALA Ironwood Athletic Programs.

GO WARRIORS!

Sincerely,

Vince Johnson
